MLFF integrates Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with FASTag-based Electronic Toll Collection — a distinct technology from the separate GNSS/satellite-based distance tolling NHAI is piloting elsewhere.
Shahjahanpur is the third plaza on this corridor (after Daulatpura and Manoharpura) to go barrier-free; users with insufficient FASTag balance get a 72-hour E-Notice window before double charges apply.
MLFF (used at Shahjahanpur) removes the physical toll barrier at existing, fixed toll plaza locations by combining ANPR cameras with FASTag-linked billing — vehicles are still charged at fixed points, just without stopping. GNSS-based tolling, being piloted separately by NHAI (e.g., on NH-275 Bengaluru-Mysuru and NH-709 Panipat-Hisar), has no fixed toll point at all — it charges purely by distance travelled, using satellite positioning, and offers up to 20 km of toll-free travel daily for GNSS-fitted vehicles. NHAI's stated target is nationwide GNSS coverage by the end of 2026.
Simple Analogy: MLFF removes the toll booth's gate but keeps the toll booth; GNSS-based tolling removes the toll booth altogether and tracks the journey itself.
