Flag Point at Sri Vijaya Puram is where Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the Tricolour on 30 December 1943, the first assertion of Indian sovereignty over Indian territory during the freedom struggle — which is why launching Har Ghar Tiranga there on August Kranti Diwas links the 1942 Quit India Movement and the 1943 declaration in a single frame. The strategic reference is equally deliberate. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit astride the approaches to the Strait of Malacca, through which a very large share of global trade passes, and the Great Nicobar project is designed around that geography: a transshipment terminal at Galathea Bay to capture cargo currently handled by foreign ports, and an airport with a runway long enough for wide-body aircraft. The project has also drawn sustained criticism on ecological and tribal-rights grounds, since Great Nicobar holds significant rainforest and is home to particularly vulnerable tribal groups — a tension worth carrying into any answer on island development.
