India crossed 300 GW of non-fossil fuel based installed electricity generation capacity as on 31 July 2026 — over 60% of the 500 GW targeted by 2030.
The breakdown is solar 164.59 GW, wind 58.14 GW, hydro 57.24 GW, bio-power 11.75 GW and nuclear 8.78 GW, totalling 300.50 GW.
Non-fossil sources now account for over 54% of India's total electricity generation capacity of around 552 GW.
A record 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity was installed during 2025-26, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind.

The two terms are routinely confused and examiners exploit the difference. Non-fossil capacity covers every source that does not burn fossil fuel — which includes nuclear power. Renewable capacity excludes nuclear, since uranium is a finite mined resource. In this release the distinction is visible in the arithmetic: of the 300.50 GW of non-fossil capacity, 8.78 GW is nuclear, so renewable capacity is the remainder. India's Panchamrit pledge of 500 GW by 2030 is expressed in non-fossil terms, which is why nuclear counts towards it. A second distinction matters as much: capacity is what is installed, generation is what is actually produced. Solar and wind have low capacity utilisation compared with thermal plants, which is why a 54% share of installed capacity does not translate into a 54% share of electricity generated.
Simple Analogy: Capacity is the size of the tap; generation is how much water actually comes out. A wide tap that runs only when the sun shines delivers less than its width suggests.
