A study published in Nature on 12 August 2026 describes MoM-BH*-1, an object interpreted as a 'black hole star' in the early universe.
It was detected by the James Webb Space Telescope during the Mirage or Miracle (MoM) survey and lies in the constellation Cetus.
The object is seen as it existed less than 660 million years after the Big Bang, at a spectroscopic redshift of about 7.76.
It has a central black hole of roughly 100,000 solar masses wrapped in a dense hydrogen envelope about the size of the Solar System.
The finding offers an explanation for the 'Little Red Dots' that JWST has been seeing across the early universe.
A black hole star is a proposed kind of early-universe object in which a growing black hole sits at the centre of a dense envelope of hydrogen and helium gas. From outside it looks like an enormous star, but the energy does not come from nuclear fusion in a core, as in an ordinary star; it comes from matter falling onto the black hole and releasing gravitational energy. The gas envelope reprocesses that radiation, which is why the object's spectrum resembles a stellar atmosphere rather than a bare accreting black hole.
Simple Analogy: An ordinary star is a furnace burning fuel in its core. A black hole star is a drain with a fog around it - the light comes from what is falling in, not from what is burning.
