Babirusa are unusually hard to breed. Litters are tiny by pig standards — one or two piglets, against the eight or more a domestic sow may produce — and sexual maturity comes only at one to two years. That makes every birth in a managed breeding programme demographically significant, and it makes the wild population slow to recover from any shock. African swine fever is exactly such a shock: it kills quickly, has no established cure, and spreads through wild suid populations that cannot be vaccinated or quarantined. Chester Zoo's babirusa line has been productive enough that Matano's descendants now live in zoos across Europe, and the zoo's work has supported Indonesian colleagues in breeding at least 17 babirusas towards national breeding targets — so a piglet in Cheshire is a small addition to a global insurance population.

Babirusa are seed dispersers: they swallow fruit and drop seeds as they forage, helping degraded forest regenerate, and their presence is treated as an indicator of overall forest health. Losing them would not be a single-species loss but a functional one for Indonesian island forests. The case also illustrates a broader pattern examiners like — a livestock disease jumping into wildlife. African swine fever is primarily a threat to domestic pig farming, but where wild suids share the landscape it becomes a conservation emergency, blurring the line between animal husbandry policy and wildlife protection.
