A study published in Ecology and Evolution on 12 August 2026 finds that dog waste poses a previously unrecognised risk to urban dung beetles.
Researchers from Clark University, Massachusetts, working with the urban dung beetle Onthophagus orpheus, found about 67% of beetles in field surveys were drawn to dog dung over cow dung.
Offspring raised on dog dung developed faster and emerged larger, but nearly 60% of brood balls failed on dog dung against about 25% on cow dung.
The likely cause is pharmaceutical residue: most pet dogs are routinely given antiparasitic drugs containing macrocyclic lactones.
The pattern is a classic ecological trap, in which an animal prefers a habitat or resource that reduces its own reproductive success.
Animals choose habitats and resources using cues that reliably predicted quality over evolutionary time - smell, colour, structure. An ecological trap arises when human activity changes the environment so that the cue survives but the reward does not, and the animal's own preference now leads it to a worse outcome. Here the beetles read dog dung as an unusually rich resource, which by nutritional measures it is, and they were right about growth: larvae developed faster and adults emerged bigger. What the cue could not signal was pharmaceutical residue, and more than half the brood balls failed. The gap between what the animal prefers and how its offspring actually perform is what ecologists call a preference-performance mismatch.
Simple Analogy: It is like a moth flying into a streetlight. For millions of years, steering by a distant light meant steering by the Moon. The cue is unchanged; only the world around it is.
A 2013 study in Current Biology, led by Marie Dacke of Lund University, showed that dung beetles orient along a straight line using the bright band of the Milky Way. It was the first documented use of the Milky Way for orientation by any animal, and it won an Ig Nobel Prize in 2013 in biology and astronomy.
India's own textbook case is diclofenac. The painkiller, given to cattle, poisoned vultures that fed on carcasses and drove a catastrophic population collapse; veterinary use was banned in 2006, and aceclofenac and ketoprofen were later banned in 2023. The dung beetle finding is the same mechanism at a smaller scale - a drug given to an animal reaching a species that was never the target.
The study is about a resource that only exists in quantity because of cities. Pet waste accumulating in urban green spaces is a new and expanding category of organic matter, and this is among the first assessments of what it does to the invertebrates that process dung.
