India recognised the State of Israel in 1950 but established full diplomatic relations only in January 1992. The relationship has since broadened from defence procurement into agriculture, water management, and now health and innovation - Israel runs Centres of Excellence in agriculture across several Indian states, and the two countries are partners with the UAE and the United States in the I2U2 grouping, whose first leaders' summit was held in July 2022. A youth hackathon is a small item in that portfolio, but it is the kind of people-to-people programme both governments have been trying to add to a partnership long dominated by government-to-government defence contracts.
