Karnataka has approved the phased rollout of SAMASTA, an integrated community digital health platform that replaces paper-based record-keeping by frontline health workers.
The platform cuts the ASHA diary from 485 manual data elements to 134 digital data points, projected to reduce field data-entry workload by about 75%.
SAMASTA is aligned with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and integrates family IDs, Aadhaar-based verification and ABHA IDs.
A pilot in Udupi district recorded 95% beneficiary registration, 85% completion of health check-ups and over 4 lakh ABHA IDs linked.
The state also sanctioned Rs 10.04 crore to expand the Taluk Mental Health Programme to 31 taluks in the Kalyana Karnataka region.
Build a national digital health ecosystem with interoperable health records, implemented by the National Health Authority under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
Key: Issues the ABHA number, a 14-digit digital health identity; the mission crossed 90 crore ABHA accounts, announced on 30 May 2026
Deliver comprehensive primary healthcare, including preventive and non-communicable disease services, close to the community
Key: The renamed Health and Wellness Centres, the primary-care pillar of Ayushman Bharat
Extend mental health services below the district level, to the taluk
Key: Rs 10.04 crore sanctioned for 31 taluks in Kalyana Karnataka, including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Yadgir and Koppal
Accredited Social Health Activists were introduced under the National Rural Health Mission launched in 2005; they are community volunteers paid through performance-based incentives, not regular salaries
The region formerly called Hyderabad-Karnataka, renamed in 2019; it enjoys special constitutional provisions under Article 371J, inserted by the 98th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2012
SAMASTA sits in the same design family as Aadhaar-based verification and ABHA - identity first, then interoperable records - the approach India promotes internationally as digital public infrastructure
