The Ministry of Defence signed contracts with TATA Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited for Loiter Munition Systems, along with munitions and accessories, at an approximate cost of ₹1,577 crore for the Indian Army.
The contracts were signed in New Delhi on 14 August 2026 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The systems are being procured under the Buy (Indian) category through the Fast Track Procedure, and are intended to enhance the capability of the Army's Artillery Regiments.
A missile is launched at a target that has already been identified and cannot wait; an armed drone flies to a target area, releases a separate weapon and returns to be used again. A loitering munition sits between them: it carries its warhead in its own airframe, flies to the target area and then loiters there — for minutes or hours — while an operator watches through its camera and decides whether and what to strike, before diving into the target and destroying itself along with it. That combination gives an artillery formation something it never had: the ability to hold a target area under continuous observation and strike the instant a fleeting target appears, at a fraction of the cost of a guided missile. The trade-off is that the airframe is expended on every use, so unit cost and production capacity matter more than for a reusable drone — which is why a contract like this covers systems, munitions and accessories together rather than aircraft alone. It is also why these weapons are procured for Artillery Regiments: functionally they are precision fires, not aviation.
Simple Analogy: A missile is an arrow already loosed; an armed drone is a hunter who flies out and shoots; a loitering munition is an arrow that can circle above the field and choose its own moment to fall.
Procure equipment from Indian vendors with a stipulated minimum of indigenous content
