The National Statistics Office under MoSPI released the Quarterly Bulletin on Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (QBUSE) for April-June 2026, the quarterly edition of the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE).
Estimated establishments rose 9.20 per cent year-on-year to 8.67 crore, while employment grew 6.55 per cent to 13.70 crore.
Other Services drove the growth with a rise of over 21 per cent in both establishments and workers, while the unincorporated trade segment contracted by 7.88 per cent in establishments and 10.29 per cent in employment.
Women accounted for more than 30 per cent of total employment; about 82 per cent of establishments used the internet for business and nearly 80 per cent accepted cashless payment.
The share of establishments reporting some form of registration rose to 42.50 per cent, more than 7 percentage points higher than in April-June 2025.
An unincorporated enterprise is a producer unit that is not incorporated as a legal entity separate from its owner. The assets it uses belong to the owner rather than to the enterprise, and the enterprise cannot enter into contracts or incur liabilities in its own name. In survey terms this covers proprietorships, partnerships other than Limited Liability Partnerships, cooperatives and societies or trusts - which is why 98.88 per cent of the establishments counted here are proprietary or partnership units. ASUSE covers three broad activity groups within this universe: manufacturing, trade and other services. Construction is excluded, and so is agriculture, which is why QBUSE movements will not track quarterly GDP, a caveat the release itself makes.
Simple Analogy: A registered company is a person in the eyes of the law with its own bank account and liabilities. An unincorporated enterprise is more like a trade the owner carries on - the shop's assets and debts are the shopkeeper's own.
