US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh on 21 August 2026, closing a tour that had taken him through Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Thiksey Gompa, founded in 1433, belongs to the Gelug (Yellow Hat) order of Tibetan Buddhism and stands about 19 km east of Leh, overlooking the Indus valley.
Its twelve-storey terraced layout gives it the nickname 'Mini Potala', after the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
The monastery houses a 15-metre Maitreya Buddha statue spanning two storeys, consecrated in 1980, and holds the annual Gustor festival of masked Cham dances.
Gor, sworn in as ambassador in November 2025, also serves as US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.
The Gelug is one of the principal schools of Tibetan Buddhism, founded by Je Tsongkhapa in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, and it is the school to which the Dalai Lamas belong. Its emphasis is on monastic discipline and a graded course of philosophical study, which is why Gelug monasteries such as Thiksey function as teaching institutions with resident student monks. Thiksey's founder, Spon Palden Sherab, acted under a master in Tsongkhapa's disciple lineage, which places the monastery firmly within that scholastic tradition roughly a generation after the school's formation.
Simple Analogy: Think of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism as distinct academic traditions rather than sects at odds: Gelug is the one that built the strongest examination-and-degree system for its monks.
Thiksey sits on the right bank of the Indus about 19 km east of Leh, in the Union Territory of Ladakh, which was carved out of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 and comprises the Leh and Kargil districts. The Zanskar joins the Indus at Sangam near Nimmu, west of Leh - the rafting stretch on the ambassador's itinerary. The Stok range rises across the valley from the monastery.
