Ecuador's Ministry of Risk Management declared a red alert across the country on 29 August 2026 in response to the ongoing El Nino episode.
The alert activates emergency committees that can order preventive evacuations and other precautionary measures.
Official estimates project that nearly 1.3 million residents across 17 provinces could be affected, with drought and wildfires in the Amazon region the main worry.
Panama, Honduras and El Salvador have also declared emergencies, and Peru has done so in several cities over high temperatures and rainfall.
Forecasters expect the episode to peak by the end of 2026 and say it could be among the strongest on record.
El Nino is the warm phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation, a coupled ocean-atmosphere cycle in the tropical Pacific. In normal years the trade winds push warm surface water westwards towards Indonesia and cold, nutrient-rich water wells up off the South American coast. During El Nino the trade winds weaken, the warm pool slides east, and sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific rise. That shifts the atmospheric convection - and therefore the rainfall - eastwards, so regions that are usually wet turn dry and usually dry coasts receive torrential rain. The effects reach far beyond the Pacific through atmospheric teleconnections.
Simple Analogy: Think of a bathtub of warm water normally held at one end by a fan. Turn the fan down and the warm water sloshes back across the tub - and everything that depended on where the warm water sat has to rearrange itself.
Ecuador sits on the Pacific coast of north-western South America, straddling the equator from which it takes its name, with Colombia to the north and Peru to the south and east. Its capital is Quito, high in the Andes, and the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific are Ecuadorian territory. President Daniel Noboa has been in office since 2023 and was re-elected in 2025. The country is dollarised - it uses the US dollar as legal tender - and its Amazon provinces in the east are the areas most exposed to the drought and fire risk flagged in this alert.
