National Sports Day was observed on 29 August 2026 to commemorate the 121st birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, with the national event held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, India Gate, New Delhi.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Minister of Law and Justice Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal led the celebrations, which began with floral tribute at Major Dhyan Chand's statue.
The celebrations centred on the nationwide 'Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein' initiative, urging citizens and especially young people to dedicate at least one hour to sports and physical activity - presented by the Minister as a push for the Fit India Movement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to sports lovers and paid homage to Major Dhyan Chand, saying the dedication, passion and determination of sportspersons make the nation proud.
Cricket, football and tug of war were among the activities; the cricket competition featured Ministry XI, SAI XI, Media XI and Influencers XI, with Ministry XI beating Media XI in the opening match.
Launched by the Prime Minister at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi on 29 August 2019 - National Sports Day itself - to make fitness an integral part of daily life and bring about a behavioural shift towards a physically active lifestyle.

Established in 1984 as a continuation of the legacy of the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, SAI is the field arm of sports promotion - it runs national training centres and academies and implements Khelo India and TOPS on the ground. An SAI XI played in the National Sports Day cricket competition.
The nodal ministry for sports policy, national sports awards, Khelo India, TOPS and the Fit India Movement. Its Department of Sports administers the schemes and organised the National Sports Day programme.

It moves Indian sports administration from executive guidelines to statute: it provides for the development and promotion of sport, welfare of sportspersons, ethical practices based on the universal principles of good governance of the Olympic and sports movement, and unified resolution of sports grievances and disputes. It creates the National Sports Board to recognise and regulate sports organisations, and a National Sports Tribunal - headed by a chairperson drawn from the Supreme Court bench or a former Chief Justice of a High Court, with two members proficient in law, administration or sport - to adjudicate sports disputes. It also brings athletes into governance structures and introduces protections through a Safe Sports Policy.
National Sports Day and the launch of the Fit India Movement (2019) fall on the same date - the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. National Sports Awards are conventionally conferred around this date.
Khelo India (mass participation and talent identification, 2016-17), SAI academies and centres, and TOPS (elite Olympic-medal support, 2014) form a three-stage pipeline. Questions often ask which scheme sits at which stage.
The National Sports Governance Act, 2025 replaced a regime of executive sports codes with statutory regulation through the National Sports Board and the National Sports Tribunal - an instance of the wider shift from guidelines to law in Indian administration.
