A major flash flood struck Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona on 29 August 2026, beginning at about 2.30 p.m. local time.
Nearly all the footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, cutting hiker access across the creek, and trails, utilities and facilities were damaged along the canyon floor.
Sixty-two people had been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail by the morning of 30 August; two bodies were later recovered and one person remained unaccounted for.
The flood was a compound hazard: intense monsoon rainfall over the burn scar of the 2025 Dragon Bravo wildfire, on drought-hardened soil in steep, narrow drainage.
Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the entire North Kaibab Trail and the Black and Silver bridges were closed, and the Colorado River was closed to river traffic.
In a healthy catchment, vegetation intercepts rain, roots hold soil and porous ground absorbs much of what falls. Two things here removed that buffer. First, the 2025 Dragon Bravo wildfire stripped vegetation and left a burn scar; intense heat also drives organic compounds into the soil where they condense into a water-repellent layer, so burnt slopes shed water instead of soaking it up, and shed sediment and debris with it. Second, prolonged drought bakes and compacts the surface, which reduces infiltration rather than increasing it, contrary to the common assumption that dry soil soaks up more. Add steep slopes and narrow tributary canyons that funnel water into a single channel, and half an hour of thunderstorm rain arrives at the canyon floor as a debris-laden wall rather than a rise in the creek.
Simple Analogy: Rain on a burnt, sun-baked slope behaves the way water does on a tiled roof, not on a sponge.

Fix the geography in one picture: the Colorado rises in the Rocky Mountains, crosses the Colorado Plateau and cuts the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona before heading towards the Gulf of California. Bright Angel Creek enters the Colorado from the north, and Phantom Ranch sits near its mouth on the canyon floor, reached by the North Kaibab Trail from the North Rim.
