The flood originated near the China–Nepal border in Rasuwa district, where the Bhotekoshi (Trishuli) river crosses from Tibet into Nepal at the Rasuwagadhi–Gyirong trade point, and travelled down the Trishuli valley. The Trishuli joins the Narayani, which enters India as the Gandak, a left-bank tributary of the Ganga — which is why bodies were carried as far as Indian territory.
