Scientists at ARCI, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, have developed a single-piece dental implant that fuses a titanium alloy fixture with a zirconia crown region.
The single-piece design removes the abutment interface, where micromovements can compromise osseointegration, and cuts the two to three surgeries a conventional implant needs.
It was made by Spark Plasma Sintering in a custom tapered graphite die, reaching 99.5% density with a crack-free interface; the work is published in Materials Letters.
