Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, died on 8 September 2026 at a Hong Kong hospital, aged 89.
He held office from 1 July 1997, when Britain transferred sovereignty over Hong Kong to China, until 12 March 2005, and was succeeded by Donald Tsang.
A Shanghai-born shipping magnate, he ran the family group Orient Overseas; Orient Overseas (International) Ltd was sold to state-owned COSCO Shipping in a deal announced in July 2017.
His tenure covered the Asian financial crisis, the SARS outbreak and the July 2003 protest against the proposed Article 23 national security law.
He then served as a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference from March 2005 to March 2023.
Born in Shanghai, eldest son of shipping magnate C.Y. Tung.
