Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) in the Ministry of Defence competition for the Armoured Fighting Vehicle-Indian Light Tank (AFV-ILT) programme under Project Zorawar, valued at about Rs 20,000 crore.
The programme seeks a 25-tonne class light tank for high-altitude deployment in areas such as Ladakh, where heavier main battle tanks like the T-72 and T-90 are harder to move.
Procurement is under the Ministry of Defence's Make-I category, in which the government funds up to 70% of design and prototype development costs.
TASL must develop and demonstrate two operational prototypes within 130 weeks; Mahindra Defence Systems, the second-lowest bidder (L2), has also been assigned prototype development.
The selection followed a three-year evaluation of technical and commercial bids from five companies; competitors' objections were dismissed by the Indian Army and the Ministry of Defence.
