UIDAI launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK (Software Development Kit) and the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
The SDK embeds face authentication inside native Android and iOS apps, removing the need for users to switch between applications, and carries AI/ML-based liveness and anti-spoofing checks.
The Sandbox lets organisations test the full authentication journey — consent, face capture, liveness, error handling — including failure cases such as invalid digital signatures, timeouts and spoofing attempts, without external biometric hardware.
UIDAI also released a 'Playbook on ease of Onboarding' for BFSI entities joining the Aadhaar authentication ecosystem.
Issues Aadhaar and runs the authentication ecosystem; a statutory authority under the Aadhaar Act, 2016 (created 12 July 2016), it earlier functioned from January 2009 as an attached office of the then Planning Commission
Operates the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS), under which a business correspondent lets an Aadhaar-linked account holder withdraw or deposit cash and check balances on biometric authentication at a micro-ATM
Requires an additional factor of authentication for digital payment transactions — the mandate this SDK is designed to help BFSI entities meet
Gives UIDAI statutory status and governs enrolment, authentication and the use of Aadhaar data.
A nine-judge Supreme Court bench held privacy to be a fundamental right under Article 21, setting the test any Aadhaar-based authentication must satisfy.
A five-judge bench upheld the Aadhaar Act but struck down Section 57, which had allowed private entities to demand Aadhaar — the reason voluntary, consent-based authentication routes matter for fintechs.
A camera can be fooled by a photograph or a video replay. Liveness detection uses AI/ML cues to check that a real person is present before the face is matched against the stored Aadhaar record, which is why the Sandbox lets developers deliberately test spoofing attempts.
AePS extends banking to areas without branches through business correspondents, and face authentication removes the dependence on fingerprint quality, a known barrier for manual workers and the elderly.
The Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox follows the model of the RBI's regulatory sandbox — a controlled environment to test before live deployment.
