Researchers at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, used magnetic minerals in sediments below Bakhira Lake to reconstruct 25,000 years of Indian Summer Monsoon variability.
Bakhira, in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, is an oxbow/floodplain wetland of the Ghaghara-Rapti system and a Ramsar site; the sequence is dated by seven AMS radiocarbon dates.
The record captures the Last Glacial Maximum, Bolling-Allerod, Younger Dryas, the Holocene Climatic Optimum and late-Holocene droughts, and is meant to improve monsoon models and water-resource planning in the Central Ganga Plain.
