Guru Purnima 2026 was observed on Wednesday, 29 July, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashadha.
The festival honours teachers, mentors, and spiritual guides through the ancient Guru-Shishya tradition.
It is also known as Vyasa Purnima, traditionally believed to mark the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, compiler of the four Vedas and author of the Mahabharata.
The day also holds significance in Buddhism (Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath) and Jainism (Mahavira accepting Gautam Swami as his first disciple).
Revered as the Adi Guru (First Guru) in Indian tradition, Ved Vyasa is traditionally believed to have compiled and classified the four Vedas, authored the Mahabharata, composed the Brahma Sutras, and edited several Puranas.
