The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on 29 July 2026 by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.
It amends Section 13(3) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 (last amended in 2023) to make delayed registration more stringent.
Delayed registration made between one and two years will need approval of an Executive/Sub-Divisional/District Magistrate.
Registration delayed beyond two years will require approval of a Judicial Magistrate (First Class).
The Union Cabinet cleared the Bill for introduction on 20 July 2026.
