Distance running at the Commonwealth level is dominated by East African athletes, and Indian runners have historically been competitive at Asian rather than Commonwealth standard in the 5000m and 10000m. Beating a Kenyan runner to the line by four hundredths of a second in the 5000m, days after taking silver over twice the distance, is therefore a substantive result rather than a beneficiary of a weak field. The double also matters for the record books: no Indian track and field athlete had previously taken two medals at one edition of these Games.
