The triple jump is a horizontal jumping event in three linked phases. The athlete sprints down a runway, takes off from a board and performs a hop, landing on the same foot; then a step onto the opposite foot; then a jump into the sand pit. The distance is measured from the take-off board to the nearest mark made in the sand. Fouling the take-off board, as in the long jump, invalidates the attempt.
Simple Analogy: Think of it as three bounces chained together, where losing balance in any one of them costs the whole attempt.
