The Reserve Bank of India issued nine circulars on 6 August 2026 creating a unified framework, the Amendment Directions, for loan recovery practices.
The directions apply from 1 January 2027, deferred from the originally proposed 1 October 2026 to give lenders transition time.
Recovery calls and physical visits are permitted only between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM, with at least one day's notice before the first visit.
Lenders must record all recovery calls and preserve the recordings for at least six months.
Recovery agents must be certified by the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance before being hired.
