Colombia is a presidential republic in northern South America. Under the 1991 Constitution the President is both head of state and head of government, serves a four-year term, and is elected directly by popular vote. Where no candidate secures a majority in the first round, a runoff is held between the two leading candidates — the mechanism that produced the narrow 49.66% to 48.70% result in June 2026. The outgoing President, Gustavo Petro, had taken office in 2022 as Colombia's first left-wing head of government at the national level, so the transition marks a reversal of that political direction after a single term.

The margin is the first thing to note: a gap of under one percentage point between the two candidates points to a sharply divided electorate, and it frames the political constraints on the new administration. The policy signals given in the inaugural address were unusually specific — a hardline approach against drug trafficking, a declaration that peace talks with armed groups were exhausted, and a proposal to reduce the size of the state by up to 40%. Each reverses a position associated with the outgoing government, particularly on negotiated settlements with armed groups. The symbolism of the ceremony reinforced the break: it was held in Cali rather than the capital Bogotá, former presidents including Juan Manuel Santos were barred from attending, and a 74-year-old farmer and street vendor, Luis Felipe Yagüé, was invited as guest of honour. On 8 August 2026 the United States announced $1 billion in security assistance to Colombia.
