India completed its first-ever sea export of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana from Bihar to Australia.
The consignment was flagged off from the Integrated Unit of Irradiation-cum-Packhouse at Sikandarpur industrial area, Bihta, near Patna.
It was sourced directly from farmers in Darbhanga district and packed in seven containers.
The cargo moved by rail from Bihta to Kolkata and then by sea to Australia.
The shipment was facilitated by APEDA, a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
A Geographical Indication is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation arising from that origin. It is a form of intellectual property, but unlike a patent or trademark it belongs to a community of producers in a region rather than to a single firm. In India, GI registration is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The commercial value of a GI lies in exclusivity of naming: only makhana grown and processed in the Mithila region may be sold as Mithila Makhana, which protects the price premium that the reputation commands and prevents it being diluted by produce from elsewhere.
Simple Analogy: A GI works like a village's shared surname on a product — anyone from that village may use it, no one outside may, and the name's value depends on all of them maintaining the standard.
