The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence of the 18th Lok Sabha tabled its 25th Action Taken Report on 7 August 2026.
The committee welcomed initial steps by the Ministry of Defence and asked for a clear status roadmap for the sixth-generation aircraft initiative.
India has begun efforts to join the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a sixth-generation fighter programme led by France and Germany.
India's own fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) remains in its design phase.
France has submitted a technical and commercial proposal for 114 Rafale fighter jets, estimated at ₹3.25 lakh crore.
| Programme | Full form | Participating countries |
|---|---|---|
| FCAS | Future Combat Air System | France and Germany |
| GCAP | Global Combat Air Programme | United Kingdom, Italy and Japan |
Fighter aircraft are grouped into generations by the technologies that define them. Fifth-generation aircraft are characterised by stealth shaping and materials, integrated sensors and networked situational awareness — the class to which India's AMCA belongs. Sixth-generation aircraft are expected to extend this with advanced stealth, deeper sensor fusion, networked operations across platforms, artificial intelligence support for the pilot, and unmanned teaming, in which a crewed fighter directs accompanying uncrewed aircraft. Because these systems are expensive and technologically demanding, development has consolidated into multinational consortia rather than purely national programmes.
Simple Analogy: A fifth-generation fighter is a highly capable individual player; a sixth-generation fighter is a captain who also directs a squad of robotic teammates in the same match.
