The Australian Institute of Marine Science released its 2025/26 Long-Term Monitoring Program Annual Summary Report on 11 August 2026.
Hard coral cover in the Northern Great Barrier Reef rose to 35.1%, up from a record low of 30% in 2025.
The Central region improved from 28.6% to 31.6%, while the Southern region slipped from 26.9% to 26.4%.
Of 121 reefs surveyed, coral cover was unchanged on 56%, higher on 28% and lower on 16%.

Reef-building corals live in symbiosis with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which live inside the coral tissue, photosynthesise, and supply the coral with most of its energy as well as its colour. When water temperatures rise above the coral's tolerance for a sustained period, the coral expels these algae - the tissue turns white, which is bleaching. A bleached coral is not dead, but it is starving, and it will die if the heat stress persists. 'Hard coral cover' is the standard monitoring measure: the percentage of reef surface occupied by living hard corals, tracked by repeat surveys of the same reefs so that changes can be compared over time and across regions.
Simple Analogy: The coral is a house and the algae are the tenants who pay the rent in food. Heat stress evicts the tenants; the house stands white and empty, and survives only if they return in time.
