The Su-57E offer to India has moved well beyond a sales brochure. Russia has proposed delivering an initial batch of ready-to-fly aircraft, followed by licensed production in India under a technology transfer arrangement that Moscow says would extend to source codes and stealth technology — an unusually deep offer by the standards of fighter exports, where source-code access is normally withheld. A Russian team has inspected Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's Nashik plant, which assembled the Su-30MKI fleet, and judged that a substantial share of the existing infrastructure could be repurposed. President Putin publicly restated the offer of joint production with 'no limitations' at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2026. The missile package is part of the pitch: a fifth-generation airframe is only as useful as the stand-off weapons it can carry internally, and the Kh-69's compact dimensions are precisely what allow the Su-57 to strike at range without hanging weapons under its wings and surrendering its stealth.

India has no fifth-generation fighter in service and is developing its own, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, on a timeline that stretches into the 2030s. Any interim acquisition therefore carries strategic weight well beyond the aircraft itself: it shapes India's supply-chain dependence, its ability to integrate indigenous weapons, and its position between Russian and Western defence ecosystems. New Delhi has stayed deliberately cautious and has not accepted the offer. The examinable concepts here are stand-off strike — attacking from beyond the reach of an adversary's air defences — and the trade-off at the heart of stealth aircraft design, where every weapon carried externally undoes the radar signature the airframe was built to hide.
