A cloudburst is an extremely intense burst of rainfall over a very small area in a very short time — conventionally defined as around 100 millimetres of rain in an hour over roughly ten square kilometres. What makes it so destructive in the Himalaya is not the volume alone but the terrain: on a steep slope that water cannot soak in or spread out, so it concentrates into channels and arrives downstream as a flash flood carrying boulders and debris. The narrow footprint is also why cloudbursts are so hard to forecast — a weather station a few kilometres away may record nothing at all, so conventional observation networks can miss the event entirely even as it is happening.
