Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Gramin Gyan Setu mobile application through video conferencing on 12 August 2026 to digitally connect libraries in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency of Gujarat.
The launch was timed to National Library Day, observed on 12 August as the birth anniversary of Padma Shri S. R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India.
The platform follows a hub-and-spoke design, linking 63 village libraries in the Gandhinagar, Kalol and Sanand assembly segments to four central libraries holding 2.80 lakh books; officials said 752 libraries were interconnected within three months.
Four mobile library vans funded through MPLAD grants will visit villages every fortnight to collect issued books and deliver titles requested on the app; Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended a related event at Gandhinagar Town Hall the same day.
