IIHT SUTRA 2026, the first-ever National Conclave of the Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology, was held on 12 August 2026 at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.
It was organised by the Ministry of Textiles through the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) and inaugurated by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh.
The theme was 'IIHTs: Weaving the Future of the Indian Handloom Sector - Educate, Innovate, Transform', covering 6 Central and 5 State IIHTs.
Three MoUs were exchanged, with Grasim Industries Limited, IIM Sambalpur and the Northern India Textile Research Association, for research, faculty development and student internships.
The conclave featured an IIHT exhibition and theme pavilion, gold medals and rank certificates for top students, awards for Handloom Hackathon 2.0 winners, the film 'Weaving India's Handloom Future' and the alumni publication 'Handloom Change Makers'.

7 August was chosen as National Handloom Day because the Swadeshi Movement was formally proclaimed on that date in 1905 at Calcutta Town Hall - the handloom is the movement's most direct economic descendant.
