Namibia's Atlantic coastline is washed by the cold, nutrient-rich Benguela Current flowing northward. Two consequences follow, and exams test both. The cold water chills moist air above it, producing the persistent fog that gives the Skeleton Coast its reputation and its shipwrecks. The same current drives nutrient-rich water upward from the deep, feeding plankton and supporting one of the world's richest marine fishing grounds. The current also contributes to the aridity of the Namib Desert: air cooled over cold water carries little moisture inland as rain, which is why one of Africa's driest countries sits directly beside an ocean.
Simple Analogy: The sea beside the desert is cold enough to make fog but not rain.
