The reversal is the point. India has been buying Russian crude in rising volumes — reaching 48% of India's total crude imports in June 2026 — and is now selling refined gasoline back to Russia. Crude flows one way, finished fuel the other. The Vadinar refinery, which loaded the cargo, is itself operated by Nayara Energy Ltd., a company with Rosneft-backed ownership links, so Russian capital sits on both ends of the trade. The routing is equally telling: the cargo was trans-shipped at Damietta in Egypt rather than sailing directly, a pattern typical of trade that must navigate sanctions and shipping constraints. Russia has meanwhile kept its ban on gasoline and diesel exports in force to protect domestic supply — an exporting power turned importer in one product line while restricting outflows in the same one.
