The PPP constellation mixes four sensor types because each answers a different question. A panchromatic sensor records a single broad band of visible light and therefore delivers the sharpest spatial detail — it is what gives an image its resolution. A multispectral sensor splits light into a handful of bands (the framework specifies 4-band and 8-band satellites), enough to distinguish vegetation from soil or water and to compute vegetation indices. A hyperspectral sensor takes that much further, here to 250 contiguous bands, which allows the chemical signature of a surface to be identified — crop species, soil nutrients, mineral composition, pollutant plumes. Synthetic Aperture Radar is different in kind: it is an active sensor that emits its own microwave pulses and measures the return, so it works at night and sees through cloud, which is why X-band SAR is specified for all-weather, day-night border surveillance and flood mapping during a monsoon when optical sensors see only cloud tops. Ground Sampling Distance is the separate measure of how large a patch of ground one pixel covers, which is why the Indian Space Policy 2023 uses a 5 m GSD threshold to decide what data is free.
Simple Analogy: Panchromatic is a sharp black-and-white photograph, multispectral is a colour photograph, hyperspectral is a chemistry lab reading of every pixel, and SAR is a torch you carry so you can see in the dark and through fog.
