The 3.584-km elevated corridor will run between Convent Junction and the Dock Area.
It will separate road and rail traffic and bypass nine railway level crossings that see about 18 gate closures a day.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal approved the project after appraisal by the Delegated Investment Board.
Visakhapatnam Port handled 91.17 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2025-26.
Cargo throughput is the total volume of cargo a port handles over a period, usually expressed in million metric tonnes per year. It is the standard measure of a port's operational scale and is used to rank ports and assess handling capacity. Throughput is a flow measure, not a capacity measure — it records what was actually moved, which is why bottlenecks such as level crossings matter: they cap what a port can move regardless of the berths and cranes available.
Simple Analogy: The width of a road tells you its capacity; the number of vehicles that actually passed tells you its throughput.
