The Synchronous All India Elephant Estimation 2021-25 is India's first genetic, or DNA-based, elephant count. Earlier national estimates relied largely on direct sightings and dung-decay methods, both of which are sensitive to observer effort and terrain. The new exercise combined genetic sampling of dung with field transects and spatial capture-recapture modelling, which allows individual elephants to be identified rather than merely counted, and produces an estimate with a stated statistical confidence. Because the method changed, the figure is best read as a new scientific baseline for tracking future trends rather than as a directly comparable successor to older counts. The results were released in October 2025 after a delay of more than a year.

Elephants are a keystone and umbrella species: protecting the vast, connected forest tracts they need automatically protects a great many other species. India holds the largest share of the world's wild Asian elephants, which makes national policy here decisive for the species globally. The central management challenge is no longer only poaching but fragmentation — highways, railway lines, plantations and settlements cutting across traditional migration routes, which pushes herds into farmland and drives the human-elephant conflict that accounts for a large share of India's wildlife-related deaths each year. This is why the roughly 150 identified corridors, and the legal difficulty of protecting land that often lies outside notified reserves, sit at the centre of the policy debate.
