Chhattisgarh became the first inland state in India to begin exporting value-added Tilapia products, with 382 tonnes shipped to the United States.
A review meeting on the notified Tilapia cluster was held in Raipur on 20 August 2026, chaired by Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries.
The state has reported an investment of nearly Rs 900 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, with fish production reaching about 10 lakh tonnes.
More than 1,300 fish farmers, exporters and entrepreneurs took part, along with the National Fisheries Development Board, MPEDA and NABARD.
The development adds a value-added product line to Indian fisheries trade, which touched a record Rs 73,890.46 crore in 2025-26.
Indian seafood exports have historically been dominated by marine produce from coastal states, above all frozen shrimp, and by raw or minimally processed product. Two things make this shipment notable. First, it comes from a landlocked state, so every kilogram originates in ponds, tanks, reservoirs and recirculatory systems rather than the sea. Second, it is value-added product, meaning fish processed into fillets, portions or ready forms rather than sold whole and frozen. Value addition is where the margin sits: it raises realisation per tonne, keeps processing employment inside the state, and reduces the exposure of farmers to raw-commodity price swings. Tilapia is well suited to this because it is hardy, fast-growing and farmable in confined freshwater systems, and Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) is a selectively bred strain developed for exactly such aquaculture use.
Simple Analogy: Exporting whole frozen fish is selling wheat. Exporting value-added fillets is selling flour and bread. The grain is the same; the money made per tonne is not.
