On 20 August 2026 the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker transiting westwards in the Gulf of Aden had been boarded by six armed persons about 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen, and was being redirected towards Somalia.
The vessel, reported as the Seamull and also listed as Sibu 1, is a tanker of about 32,238 DWT and 25 years of age, sailing under an Eritrean flag that has been reported as false; it has been under United States sanctions since December 2025 over the carriage of Iranian petroleum.
It carried 20 crew, of whom 16 were Indian nationals, along with one Syrian, one Sudanese and one Iraqi; Indian authorities reported the Indian crew members safe.
It was the second hijacking in the region within days: the Cameroon-flagged general cargo ship Lutuf was seized on 17 August 2026 by eight armed men off Marraya on the Puntland coast of Somalia, with six Indians among its ten crew - taking the number of Indian seafarers held on the two vessels to 22.
UKMTO is a British Royal Navy-sponsored organisation set up in Dubai in 2001 and moved to Portsmouth in 2014; it is the primary point of contact between merchant vessels and military forces in West Asia and the Indian Ocean region.
