Australia confirmed its first case of highly pathogenic H5 bird flu in a mammal on 23 August 2026, in a long-nosed fur seal found dead at Beachport in South Australia.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins announced the confirmation; state-level testing had been inconclusive, and confirmatory testing was done at the CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.
H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b reached mainland Australia only in June 2026, in a brown skua and a southern giant petrel on the south coast of Western Australia, with genomes linked to viruses from the sub-Antarctic Southern Indian Ocean.
Australia has since recorded 298 positive H5 bird flu events, 194 of them in South Australia, including a mass die-off of more than 1,000 greater crested terns.
Authorities said there is no evidence of infection in poultry or agricultural systems, and advised the public not to touch sick or dead birds and to keep dogs on leads and cats indoors.
H5N1 is a subtype of Influenza A, a virus of the Orthomyxoviridae family. The H and N in the name refer to two proteins on the virus surface: haemagglutinin, which lets the virus attach to and enter a host cell, and neuraminidase, which lets newly made virus particles break free. Subtypes are numbered by which version of each protein a strain carries, so H5N1 means haemagglutinin type 5 with neuraminidase type 1. 'Highly pathogenic' is a classification based on how lethal the strain is to poultry, not to people - highly pathogenic strains can kill nearly all infected chickens and turkeys within about 48 hours. Strains are further grouped into clades by genetic lineage; the panzootic now circling the world is clade 2.3.4.4b, which has spread along migratory bird flyways through Europe, the Americas and the sub-Antarctic. Human infections remain rare and there is no sustained human-to-human transmission, but the reported cases have carried a very high fatality rate, which is why every jump into a new mammal species is watched closely: repeated mammalian infection is the setting in which a virus could acquire mutations that let it bind human-type receptors.
Simple Analogy: Think of haemagglutinin as the key that opens a cell's door and neuraminidase as the scissors that cut the new viruses free on the way out. The subtype name simply records which key and which scissors a given strain carries.

Beachport sits on South Australia's Limestone Coast, on the state's south-east shoulder facing the Southern Ocean, roughly 300 km south of Adelaide. The virus's Australian entry point was further west - the south coast of Western Australia - and its genetic relatives were found on Heard Island, an Australian sub-Antarctic external territory in the southern Indian Ocean. Kangaroo Island, where a further suspected seal case was reported, lies off the South Australian coast south-west of Adelaide and is a major pinniped breeding ground.
