China announced on 23 August 2026 that the Chang'e-7 robotic lunar mission would not launch in its planned window this year.
The stated reason was that the mission did not meet launch conditions, following a comprehensive assessment made on principles of prudence, reliability and absolute mission success.
The probe and its Long March 5 Y14 rocket had already been moved to the pad at the Wenchang launch site in Hainan on 19 August 2026.
Chang'e-7 is designed to hunt for water ice in permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole, with an orbiter, lander, rover and a hopping probe.
The delay could push the mission into 2027, since polar landing sites allow only a small number of usable launch windows a year.
Chang'e-1, China's first lunar orbiter, begins the programme's orbital phase.

The Moon's axis is tilted only about 1.5 degrees to the plane of its orbit around the Sun, so near the poles the Sun never rises far above the horizon. Deep crater floors there are never lit at all. Temperatures in these permanently shadowed regions can stay below about minus 200 degrees Celsius, cold enough to trap water and other volatiles delivered by comets and the solar wind over billions of years. The same geometry that creates the cold traps is what limits missions: a lander needs both the right orbital alignment and useable sunlight on the rim it lands on, which narrows launch opportunities for polar missions to a handful in a year.
