The Smew breeds in the northern taiga of Europe and Asia and normally winters far from India - on sheltered coasts and inland lakes around the Baltic, the Black Sea and the Caspian, in Great Britain, and in East China, Korea and Japan. It reaches the Indian subcontinent only as an occasional visitor, which is what makes a confirmed record in Assam significant. It is a compact diving duck with a narrow bill whose tooth-like edges and hooked tip are adapted to gripping fish, and it forages by diving from the surface and swimming underwater after prey. The plumage is unmistakable once seen: the male is white with a black mask and black back, the female grey with a reddish-brown head and a white cheek, and both show black-and-white wings in flight. Its preferred habitats - freshwater lakes, reservoirs, flooded woodland, ice-free rivers, sheltered bays, estuaries, lagoons and tidal creeks - map closely onto the beel wetlands of the Brahmaputra floodplain, which is why a wintering record here is plausible even though it had never been documented at this site before.

A first record is not merely a birdwatcher's trophy. Forest officials treat the Smew's presence as an indicator of the ecological condition of Laokhowa's beels and of their value as wintering grounds for migratory waterbirds - a bird that fastidious about clear, fish-bearing water does not turn up in degraded wetlands. The record also strengthens the case for treating Laokhowa as more than a buffer appendage to Kaziranga. The simultaneous documentation of the Bengal florican, one of the world's most threatened grassland birds, points the same way: the sanctuary's alluvial grasslands and wetlands are carrying species that the larger, better-known protected areas nearby are relied upon to hold. For conservation planning, that shifts Laokhowa from a peripheral unit to a site whose grassland and beel habitats warrant protection in their own right.
