ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said on 23 August 2026, at the third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad, that India will establish the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS) by 2035.
He confirmed that the first module of the station has already been approved; the module is targeted for launch in 2028.
BAS is planned as a five-module, roughly 52-tonne station in low Earth orbit at 400-450 km altitude and an inclination of about 51.5 degrees, launched on LVM3 and LVM3-SC vehicles.
The station is an extension of the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, whose first crewed flight is targeted for 2027; the Union Cabinet approved BAS development on 18 September 2024.
Narayanan said India's space-based applications now serve citizens across more than 50 fields, from remote sensing and telecommunications to disaster warning and navigation.

India's human spaceflight programme, approved with an outlay of Rs 20,193 crore. BAS uses the crew module, escape system, life-support and human-rating work done for Gaganyaan; three uncrewed flights (G1, G2, G3) carrying the humanoid robot Vyommitra precede the crewed mission targeted for 2027.
Partially reusable heavy-lift rocket approved by the Cabinet on 18 September 2024 with an outlay of Rs 8,240 crore, designed for up to 30 tonnes to low Earth orbit. It is meant to carry the heavier BAS modules and later lunar missions.
Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told the Ahmedabad event that private firms are now building satellites, payloads and applications and running launches, complementing ISRO rather than competing with it.
