Hindalco Industries commissioned India's first greenfield Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) plant at Belagavi, Karnataka, on 27 August 2026.
Phase 1 capacity is 30,000 tonnes a year, designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes.
PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant filler used in cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints, suppressing flame spread without releasing halogen acid gases.
The company describes it as the world's only specialty alumina plant running entirely on renewable energy, drawing on solar, wind and biomass.
The plant substitutes imports for the wire and cable industry at a time of tightening fire-safety standards and growing electric vehicle and infrastructure demand.
Aluminium trihydrate is aluminium hydroxide in mineral form. Mixed into a polymer, it does two useful things when the material heats up: it releases chemically bound water, which cools the burning surface and dilutes the flammable gases, and it leaves behind an alumina residue that shields the material underneath. Because it works physically rather than through halogen chemistry, it suppresses flame without producing the corrosive, toxic acid gases that halogenated retardants emit - the reason building and metro fire-safety codes increasingly specify halogen-free cables. 'Superfine' refers to particle size: finer particles disperse more evenly in the polymer and allow higher loading without wrecking the material's mechanical or electrical properties.
Simple Analogy: It is a fire blanket built into the plastic itself - as the material heats, it sweats out water and leaves a mineral crust behind.
