Indian and international researchers have built SAMBAR - the South Asian MicroBiome ARray - the first baseline gut microbiome dataset drawn from healthy individuals in the region.
The study was led by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, with the University of Chicago and collaborating institutions in India, Sri Lanka and the United States.
Stool samples along with dietary, lifestyle and health information were collected from 575 healthy adults belonging to ten culturally and geographically distinct South Asian communities.
South Asian gut microbiomes were found to occupy a distinct compositional space compared with global cohorts, correlating more strongly with geography and community membership than with lifestyle alone.
Because each community follows its own trajectory as it urbanises, the authors argue microbiome-based therapies must be tailored to regional populations rather than imported from Western datasets. The work appeared in the journal Gut Microbes.
The gut microbiome is the community of microorganisms - bacteria, viruses and fungi among them - that lives in the gastrointestinal tract in a symbiotic relationship with its host. It is acquired first in infancy, through vaginal delivery and breastfeeding, and is then continuously reshaped by diet and environmental exposure. Its functions go well beyond digestion: it helps extract energy and nutrients from food, synthesises several vitamins the body cannot make for itself, maintains the gut barrier that stops bacteria and bacterial toxins leaking into the bloodstream, and modulates the immune system. Because the composition of that community shifts with what a person eats and where they live, it has become a standard lens for studying diet, urbanisation and lifestyle disease.
Simple Analogy: Think of it as a resident workforce rather than a passenger list: the organisms are not just living in the gut, they are doing jobs the body itself cannot do, and the mix of workers changes with the local supply of raw material - the diet.
