India comes to World Lake Day with a policy architecture built mostly around wetlands rather than lakes as such. The National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems is the central scheme through which the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change supports states in conserving lakes and wetlands, and the Amrit Dharohar initiative, launched in 2023, focuses specifically on the management of Ramsar sites and the communities around them. The international layer is the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, under which India's tally reached 101 sites in August 2026 with the designation of Glaw Lake in Lohit district, Arunachal Pradesh, on 3 August - the state's first. Glaw Lake is a freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas lying within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, fed by perennial mountain streams; more than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species have been recorded in the site and its catchment, and the wider landscape supports four big cats - tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard. The lake is regarded as sacred by the local Mishmi community, which is the kind of detail that turns a conservation listing into a question about community stewardship.

Lakes occupy an odd gap in environmental governance. Rivers get basin authorities and interstate tribunals; forests get a dedicated Act; wetlands get an international convention. Standing freshwater bodies, especially the urban ones, are typically nobody's core mandate, which is why they get encroached, filled and used as drains with such regularity. That is the gap a dedicated UN observance is meant to close - by naming lakes as a category worth measuring and reporting on. The functions the day lists are the ones an examiner will want in an answer: lakes as freshwater storage for drinking and irrigation, as habitat, as carbon stores and local climate moderators, as flood buffers absorbing excess run-off, and as the base of fishing, tourism and transport livelihoods. The pressures are equally standard - pollution and solid waste, agricultural runoff carrying nutrients, over-abstraction, rising temperatures and shifting rainfall. For India, the sharper point is institutional: conservation effort flows through wetland instruments such as the NPCA and the Ramsar listing, so a lake's protection often depends on whether it is classified as a wetland at all.
