IIT Madras and UNESCO MGIEP signed a cooperation agreement on 1 September 2026 to develop next-generation AI and immersive learning technologies.
The partnership pairs UNESCO MGIEP's work on Social and Emotional Learning with IIT Madras's expertise in AI, Extended Reality and game design.
The tools are to be open-source, low-cost and usable in low-bandwidth environments.
The agreement also covers joint research in educational technology, pedagogy and learning sciences, plus faculty and researcher exchanges.

Social and Emotional Learning is an educational approach that builds five competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. It is the substance UNESCO MGIEP brings. Extended Reality is the umbrella term for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality, and it is the delivery mechanism IIT Madras brings. The partnership's premise is that SEL is hard to teach through text but well suited to simulation — a learner practising a decision inside an immersive scenario is doing something a worksheet cannot reproduce. The insistence on open-source, low-cost and low-bandwidth design is what decides whether such tools reach an ordinary government school or stay in well-funded ones.
Simple Analogy: SEL is the curriculum, XR is the classroom it is taught in, and AI is the teacher's assistant that adapts the lesson to each learner.
SDG 4 covers quality education, and target 4.7 specifically concerns education for sustainable development and global citizenship — the target UNESCO MGIEP was created to advance.
