New Zealand's Department of Conservation announced on 1 September 2026 that the official kakapo population has reached 325 birds, a recovery-era high for the critically endangered flightless parrot.
Ninety chicks from the 2026 breeding season were added to the tally once the youngest survivor crossed 150 days of age, the milestone at which a kakapo chick is counted as fledged.
It is the biggest breeding season on record: 79 females nested, 258 eggs were laid and 106 chicks hatched.
The population is thought to have last exceeded 300 birds some 75 years ago; the Kakapo Recovery Programme began in 1995 with just 51 surviving birds.
The boom followed a heavy mast fruiting of native rimu trees on predator-free island sanctuaries in Fiordland, after a four-year gap in breeding.
Masting is the synchronised, irregular production of a very heavy seed or fruit crop by a population of trees, followed by years of little or no fruiting. Kakapo breeding is tied to the masting of the rimu, a native New Zealand conifer: the birds nest only in mast years, because the fruit supplies the nutrition that chicks need. This is why kakapo numbers move in steps rather than steadily, and why 2026 followed a four-year gap in breeding. The 2026 mast was uneven - the rimu crop ripened abundantly on the two Fiordland islands, while on Whenua Hou it failed to ripen and the females there still needed supplementary feeding to raise their chicks.

Every wild kakapo lives on a small number of predator-free islands off the New Zealand coast. Whenua Hou, also known as Codfish Island, lies off Rakiura (Stewart Island) at the country's southern tip; Pukenui (Anchor Island) and Te Kahaku (Chalky Island) sit within Fiordland on the south-west of the South Island. Fiordland National Park is part of the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Site.
New Zealand's method - clearing offshore islands of introduced mammals and using them as arks - parallels India's use of protected islands and fenced enclosures for species such as the great Indian bustard, where the threat is habitat-specific rather than predator-specific.
New Zealand's long isolation produced several flightless birds, including the kiwi, the takahe and the extinct moa. The kakapo is the only parrot among them, and the heaviest parrot in the world.
The order runs Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, Extinct. The kakapo remains Critically Endangered despite the record season, because the absolute population is still tiny and confined to a few islands.
A species reduced to 51 individuals carries very little genetic diversity, so recovery programmes manage pairings deliberately. Similar bottleneck management underlies the conservation of the Asiatic lion in Gir, whose entire population descends from a small surviving group.
