Marine litter is the visible end of a problem that is mostly invisible. Plastic that reaches the sea does not disappear; it fragments, enters the food chain through fish and shellfish, and accumulates in the coastal sediments where fisheries and tourism both depend on clean water. India's exposure is unusually large because of the length of its coastline — 11,098 kilometres including the island territories — and because a substantial share of the population lives in coastal districts. The campaign's design reflects a specific judgement about how to tackle this: pair mass participation with the monitoring machinery of the PRITHVI scheme, so that beach cleanups are accompanied by seawater quality data and shoreline erosion measurement. The Ocean Olympiad introduced in 2026 extends the same logic to schools.
